Training

Wiltshire Association of Local Councils (WALC) is the lead partner of the Wiltshire & Swindon Training Partnership which was set up as a result of the National Training Strategy.  Also to emerge from the strategy is the Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCA).

You can download a CiLCA registration form, a CiLCA re-sit form and the Portfolio Guide and Assessment Criteria from the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) website.   Please note that CiLCA has recently been reviewed and the new version was launched in April 2015.  You can no longer register to undertake previous versions. An introduction to CiLCA for councillors may be viewed by visiting the NALC website.

WALC offers training opportunities tailored to meeting the needs of this qualification as well as a training programme for both clerks and councillors, at a lower cost for member councils. We provide training for both new and existing councillors and clerks and on specialist subjects relevant to the sector.

Some of the courses we run include:

Core skills for councillors – evening – bookable event
Core skills for councillors - evening – whole councils - contact the office to arrange
Councillors day
New clerks’ morning
New clerks’ full day
CiLCA
Information Governance
The external audit and annual return
Accounts and audit
Consultation basics for local councils
Employment training
Chairmanship training
Planning negotiating training
Insurance training
Introduction to Social Media
Town Planning from the Town & Parish Council Perspective

We are currently offering whole council training:

Does your council have new members?  Have existing members missed out on training in the past?  Would you welcome not having to travel to a training event?

WALC can provide core skills councillor training for your council, covering Roles and Responsibilities, Law and Procedures.

You provide the venue and gather the councillors – (from neighbouring councils as well if you wish) and we will turn up and provide a two hour core skills evening training session.

No travel for you, an opportunity to liaise with neighbouring councils, only one invoice to pay (you arrange the split between any additional delegates from other councils).

Contact Katie Fielding on 01380 729549 or at kfielding@communityfirst.org.uk to discuss costs and dates.

If your council has any other training needs, please let us know so that we can consider the demand for certain subject areas.
